Rustic Hardscape Ideas

Combining imagination with beautiful reclaimed stone, the landscape architects with whom we work create stunning rustic hardscape features. Salvaged from historic buildings and landmarks, these pieces are repurposed for practical use or  simple aesthetic appeal.  Either way, the results are both unique and impressive.

RECLAIMED MILLSTONES

Salvaged from old grain mills, these extremely hard stones are quite versatile for rustic hardscape designs.  A circular millstone makes the ideal focal point for a paving pattern, a gathering area such as a table or firepit platform, or a distinct garden or lawn feature.

STONE WATER FEATURES

Stone water features create movement and sound within the landscape. Reclaimed materials bring mass and structure to fountains, basins, and channels, allowing water to feel like an integrated rather than decorative part of a rustic hardscape.

MORE ARCHITECTURAL STONE ELEMENTS

Other unique reclaimed stone elements such as posts (granite, limestone, bluestone), planters, and granite icebreakers add scale and presence to outdoor spaces. These pieces can be utilized as functional components, complimentary accents or anchors within broader landscape designs.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQS

WHAT'S INVOLVED IN INSTALLING A STONE WATER FEATURE?

Most stone water features require a concealed basin or reservoir, a circulating pump, and access to electrical power. Installation is typically handled by a landscape contractor or water feature specialist. Permits are not usually required for small residential features, but larger or permanently plumbed installations may need local approval depending on location and electrical requirements.  In climates with freeze/thaw cycles, consulting a professional for winterizing a water feature is recommended.

DO RECLAIMED STONE ELEMENTS WORK IN MODERN DESIGNS?

Absolutely. Reclaimed stone, with its weathered textures and tones, is often used for contrast in contemporary landscapes as a counterbalance to the clean lines and shapes of modern elements.

DO LARGER RUSTIC HARDSCAPE ELEMENTS REQUIRE A FOUNDATION?

It depends on the size and function. Many feature stones simply require a compacted base, while heavier or vertical elements may need a concrete footing to ensure long-term stability.
