Reclaimed Brick & Stone Backsplashes & Kitchens

The kitchen often serves as the heart of the home – where family and friends gather and everyday life takes place. Because it plays such a central role, homeowners frequently look for materials that feel authentic, welcoming, and timeless rather than purely decorative. A brick backsplash or antique stonework provides exactly this feeling. Reclaimed materials introduce natural texture, depth, and character into a space that can otherwise feel dominated by the uniformity of cabinetry, counter surfaces, and geometrical layout. Their subtle variations, weathering, and history can add a counterpoint, helping the kitchen feel more personal, and connected to the design of neighboring rooms.

Brick Backsplashes

Using veneer sawn from authentic, century-old material, a brick backsplash is easy to install and design-friendly. From the cool tones of Antique Grey to the warm reds and terracottas of New England Mill Blend, every style and palette choice can benefit from the addition of a brick backsplash.

Brick Kitchen Feature Walls

In many kitchens, a feature wall serves as the visual centerpiece of the room.  Reclaimed brick and stone bring scale and substance to these installations, creating a statement that feels both distinctive and enduring. They are an ideal backdrop for open shelving, artwork, cabinetry, and decorative accents, helping everyday elements feel more intentional and visually connected. And in open concept layouts, they are a natural transition into dining areas and living rooms.

Antique Stone For Kitchen Walls

Antique stone is often used as a carefully placed design element rather than covering an entire kitchen wall. Stone accents can highlight a cooking alcove, frame a range, define a transition between spaces, or introduce a natural focal point within a larger composition. Even in smaller applications, antique stone brings a sense of permanence and craftsmanship that complements both traditional and contemporary kitchen designs.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQS

SHOULD I SEAL A RECLAIMED BRICK TILE BACKSPLASH?

In most kitchens, sealing a reclaimed brick tile backsplash is recommended. Brick is naturally porous and can absorb moisture, cooking oils, food splatter, and stains over time. A quality sealant helps protect the surface while making routine cleaning easier.

The type of sealant you choose can also affect the final appearance of the brick. We recommend using a matte sealant, so the tiles don’t appear wet when dry. Areas exposed to frequent cooking, grease or moisture, such as behind a range or sink, typically benefit the most from sealing.

WHAT FACTORS SHOULD I CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING RECLAIMED STONE FOR A KITCHEN WALL OR BACKSPLASH?

When selecting reclaimed stone for a kitchen wall or backsplash, consider both the appearance of the material and how it will function within the space. Color and texture influence the overall character of the finished design. Some stones feature smoother surfaces and more uniform tones, while others display pronounced texture, weathering, and natural variation that create a more rustic appearance.

It’s also important to think about scale and placement. Large-format stones can make a bold architectural statement, while smaller stones or accents may be better suited for highlighting a cooking alcove, range wall, or transition between spaces. The surrounding materials – including cabinetry, countertops, and flooring – should also be considered to ensure a cohesive design.

Finally, lighting is an extremely important factor to consider.  A stone may look very different outside than it does under interior lighting.  Bringing a sample into your space is always recommended!

HOW DO I CLEAN RECLAIMED BRICK OR STONE KITCHEN WALLS?

Wipe down the brick or stone with a warm, damp cloth regularly.  For a deeper clean, you can use a soft-bristled brush and mild dish soap, and wipe the bricks once more with a wet cloth to remove soap film.Avoid acidic cleaning solutions and stiff-wired brushes.  These can affect the texture and tone of reclaimed brick and stone, as well as damage the grouted joints.
