If you’re searching for that perfect piece – something dramatic to stand out as a feature, or unique and original to anchor your landscape design – you might just find it waiting for you in our yard. As we source for our standard materials (curbing, cobbles, blocks, etc.), we occasionally come across uncommon stonework. A big part of what makes the hunt so exciting is knowing that these amazing finds will ultimately become the perfect additions to our customers’ dream designs.
This page focuses on these rarities, as well as other stones we come across which don’t fit neatly into a given category, but have proven excellent additions to landscape and hardscape compositions. And join the Farm Fresh Finds newsletter for new arrivals – you never know what might turn up in the Stone Farm Yard!
Antique millstones reveal beautifully worn surfaces from their years as active working tools. They’re steeped in history and no two are exactly alike.
Highly sought-after for their individuality and versatility, they can be incorporated into gardens, paving designs, and firepit platforms They’re also perfect for an attention-grabbing fountain.
Our antique limestone and sandstone troughs are perhaps the most attention-grabbing items in our yard. Years of exposure to the elements have softened their surfaces and created beautiful, weathered patinas. Many visitors have stopped in to look at other material and ended up purchasing a trough to incorporate into their landscape designs.
Reclaimed troughs can be repurposed as planters, water features, or simply displayed as sculptural objects. They vary in size, shape and degree of weathering, making them one-of-a-kind additions to any project.

Large stone slabs with flat, weathered surfaces are excellent options for landings – be it attention-grabbing building entrances or distinctive step transition. Their generous scale, softened edges and worn finishes add an historic touch to functional design.
Keep in Mind:
• What are your desired dimensions?
• If sitting on the ground, will/can part of the landing be below-grade?
• Are you hoping to match to reclaimed stone steps?
Antique stone posts add a unique touch to landscape design, while also serving a practical purpose. Hand-cut surfaces, drill marks, and weathering give each post its own distinctive character.
Posts are most commonly stood upright and used to mark entrances, gateways and property boundaries. They can also serve as an interesting take on a mailbox stand, street number display or lamp pole. And they can even be laid flat and used as edging, garden borders, or stacked for firepits.
Keep in Mind:
• Factor in how much of your post will buried below grade along with how much you want exposed when determining the required length.

At any given time, a visitor to Stone Farm will see a random selection of natural fieldstones and boulders as they come down our long driveway. Unlike the reclaimed stone we carry – which was cut and worked in the past – these stones are untouched. They reveal a wide variety of shapes, sizes, colors and textures.
Our field stones and boulders bring an organic quality to a landscape design. They can be used as stepping stones, natural landings, garden accents, or grand features. Their irregular forms and weathered surfaces allow them to settle comfortably into their surroundings, often appearing as though they’ve always been part of the property.
Our favorite pieces are the rare and random ones. Sometimes they’re unexpected treasures discovered while salvaging other stone, such as the keystones and massive massive sills we found at the Baltimore City Jail. And sometimes they’re sought-after, yet hard to find pieces, such as well covers and curbing inlets.
Some treasures we discover have no discernible origin, making them even more intriguing. Whether they’re unearthed from abandoned properties or cherished for generations, their true beginnings remain a mystery.
It never ceases to amaze us how our incredible clients use these extraordinary pieces, whether by integrating them into a cozy fireplace, showcasing them as stand-up art in a beautiful garden, or incorporating them into a stunning pool design. We’re looking forward to hearing how you envision using your one-of-a-kind treasure!
