RECLAIMED

Brick pavers vs. Building Brick

Antique brick pavers differ from building bricks in several ways:

• Antique brick pavers are harvested from streets and sidewalks, while building bricks come from the facing of mills, factories and other old structures.

• Antique brick pavers are very dense and durable, while building bricks are lighter and more porous.

• Antique brick pavers were built to withstand heavy traffic and harsh climates, while building bricks used in the ground would likely fail under similar conditions.

Colors & Dimensions

Every brick we carry comes from a real building, so its color and size depend on where it was made and how it was fired. Our current blend is salvaged from across New England. Expect natural variation from brick to brick, which is what gives a finished wall its depth and character.

• We salvage these vintage bricks from mills, factories, schoolhouses and other historic buildings throughout New England.

• They are usually at least a century old and can vary slightly in size, as they were not mass-produced.

• They generally reveal deep reds and terracotta oranges common in Northeast clay.

Reclaimed Building Brick:

Repairing Old Brickwork

When restoring or repairing older brickwork, finding a match for the existing material can be a challenge. New brick tends to stand out and disrupt an aged appearance, while reclaimed brick blends seamlessly into historic masonry, with consistent style, color and texture.

Whether you’re fixing a weathered facade, patching a chimney or renovating a heritage home, reclaimed brick lets you keep the original character and integrity of the structure.

Reclaimed Building Brick:

Historic Value

Reclaimed bricks are more than just construction materials—they’re pieces of history.  Salvaged from century-old buildings, these bricks have seen generations pass by, bearing the craftsmanship of a bygone era.  We’ve reclaimed bricks from:

• Famous city row houses

• Abandoned mills, once the heartbeat of New England towns, and world leaders in textile production

• Decommissioned military plants where many of the planes and helicopters used in WWII and the Korean War were built.

Using reclaimed building bricks allows you to incorporate a tangible piece of history into your project, preserving architectural heritage while enhancing your space with authenticity and tradition.

Fequently Asked Questions

FAQS

WHY CHOOSE RECLAIMED BUILDING BRICKS RATHER THAN NEW BRICKS?
  • Reclaimed building bricks date to an era when the firing process produced a stronger, more durable product.  The fact that they’ve survived a century or more of weather and wear is a testament to the this fact.
  • Reclaimed building bricks carry the signatures of time – patinas, color variations, and imperfections add character you won’t find in new bricks.
  • If the desired aesthetic is NOT one of uniformity and sameness, reclaimed building brick is a great option to consider.
  • Using reclaimed building bricks is eco-friendly and consistent with the goals of green building and sustainability initiatives.
WHY DO RECLAIMED BUILDING BRICKS FROM SOME REGIONS DIFFER IN COLOR FROM EACH OTHER?

Historic bricks often reflect the geology of the region where they were made. Before modern manufacturing and long-distance transportation became commonplace, brickmakers typically relied on locally available clay and shale. Differences in the minerals naturally present in those raw materials, such as iron, helped produce the distinctive reds, oranges, browns, buffs, and other tones associated with bricks from different parts of the country.

Color was also influenced by how the bricks were manufactured and fired. Kiln type, firing temperature, oxygen levels, and even the position of a brick within the kiln could create noticeable variations. As a result, reclaimed bricks from different regions—and sometimes even bricks from the same historic brickyard—can have their own recognizable range of colors and character. These regional differences are part of what makes authentic reclaimed brick so distinctive.

WHY ARE BRICKS IN GENERAL A GOOD CHOICE FOR A BUILDING MATERIAL?
  • Bricks are durable and known for their longevity – especially important in regions with harsh, seasonal weather.
  • Bricks are reasonably easy to maintain.
  • Bricks have excellent inherent insulation qualities.
  • Bricks are fire-resistant.
  • Bricks are design-friendly and easily compliment other building materials.
