GRANITE GOLDRUSH: THE MOTHER LODE OF VINTAGE COBBLESTONE HAS ARRIVED

  • At Stone Farm, we're always prospecting.  Now, we're happy to announce our latest efforts have paid off with a massive haul of authentic granite cobbles, salvaged straight from the historic streets of a New Jersey industrial town, and built to last.
  • Hand-laid a century ago to support trolley lines and freight traffic, they’re now ready for a second life in your next design. These timeworn beauties are rich in character and ready for a new chapter — but, like any gold rush, they won’t last long.

DIMENSIONS

The granite cobbles typically salvaged from historic city streets and sidewalks across the Northeast tend to be roughly 8" long.  Our Jersey cobbles are quite unique in that their lengths are as short as 6".   While it may seem like a subtle difference, it presents distinct design options when compared to longer regulation cobblestones.

Specifications ( Average)

Dimensions - 6.5-7.5" L x 4.5" W x 5-6" T
Pieces per sqft - 4.4
Weight per piece - 15 lbs

COLOR

Similar to our regulations, Jersey granite cobbles reveal a range of colors--from weathered greys to earthy tans--with smooth, worn textures.

Keep in mind--cobbles reveal different colors when they are wet vs. dry.  Here are two photos of the same stones.  In the first, they are dry-with their colors slightly muted, while in the second, water has unveiled more dramatic variations.  It's always a good idea to take this into account for your design.

GRANITE COBBLES SPLIT THIN

PROCESS

  • When granite cobbles possess the right characteristics, we often split them in half.
  • Our Jersey haul has proved so prolific with excellent material meeting these standards, we've set aside a percentage of cobbles for splitting.
  • With a thickness of roughly 5", splitting these cobblestones produces two halves approximately 2.5" thick, with length and width unchanged (6"-7.5" x 4.5").
  • People seek out the antique top halves, which are usually brighter-with a smoother, worn surface.
  • The bottoms possess somewhat darker tones, along with a rougher surface.

BENEFITS

  • Split granite cobbles are easier to work with. They're more adaptable and versatile in challenging environments.
  • Bottoms are priced as much as 50% less than tops, providing a more affordable option for customers.
  • Mixing in bottoms with tops brings in a nice range of tones unavailable if you choose all of one or the other.  And again, the reduced price of bottoms brings down the overall cost of the material.
  • Shipping costs are greatly reduced, as we can ship twice the square footage of material with split cobbles vs. full bed.
